music.
Hailing from Kent , Nick is not only one of the finest underground house DJs emerging from the county's flourishing scene, but he is also responsible for that scene to be blossoming in the first place. For Nick was one of the key individuals behind the success of ClubClass, the inspirational Maidstone house institution, and undoubtedly one of the UK 's premier club nights.
In his time at ClubClass Nick has thrown a number of truly legendary parties showcasing many of the most prestigious names in dance music. This includes Eric Morillo, Deep Dish, John Digweed and Pete Tong, as well as those featuring underground heroes like Justin Robertson, Danny Howells, Paul Woolford, and the Stanton Warriors. Add to that the launch of MYNC Sessions in Leicester (a 2000 capacity sell-out) and a live Essential Mix broadcast (at ClubClass in February 2005). In September 2005 Club Class bid farewell to there home in Maidstone , The Loft, in search of their next challenge, and the world famous Ministry Of Sound in London will prove to be just that! From February 2006 CC have managed to raise the bar yet again by making MOS their new home.
When you take all this into consideration it becomes pretty apparent that these are not the achievements of any normal twenty one year old...
This is especially apparent when you consider that in between organising all these nights Carter has also been busy working on a whole host of other projects. In April 2004 Nick launched Zoolu, at River in Maidstone, whilst in 2005 he co-organised the RhythmClash DJ competition in association with Pioneer Pro DJ, which is now recognised as one of the UK's leading house and breakbeat events for aspiring DJs.
But enough about the promoting, what about the DJing? Nick's massively successful Zoolu residency provided him with the opportunity to nurture his deep, electronic house sound, whilst maintaining a hedonistic streak throughout.
This is a characteristic that Nick has maintained to this very day with a continued emphasis on quality music, exceptional DJing and bucket loads of fun. With that in mind it's not surprising that Carter states his key influences being Derrick Carter, "for his ability to keep the masses entertained whilst playing true underground house", James Zabiela "for his open-armed approach to new music technology", LTJ Bukem "for his pioneering spirit", Ralph Lawson "for his ability to build a groove from absolutly nothing that keeps people locked to the dancefloor" and DJ Rolando, whose music Carter recognises as "second to none". With these inspirational figures playing a major role in his music, it's not rare for Nick to drop a wide range of sounds into his sets. This can include some Deep West Coast House, Detroit techno, liquid drum'n'bass, minimal techno and just about anything in between. Following his summer spent in Ibiza in 2003, Nick also states the riotous playground of DC10 as a major turning point in his approach to dance music, with further influences including 20:20 Vision "for its pivotal role in pushing the deep electronic house sound across the globe" and finally a trip to Fabric, London in September 2004 to witness an education from legends when Laurent Garnier DJ'ed alongside Jeff Mills.
His stunning sets at Zoolu also provided Nick with the momentum at which to search for bookings further a field. Despite having first touched a pair of 1210's less than four years ago, Carter has already DJ'd alongside many of his personal heroes. This includes Nic Fanciulli, Lee Burridge, Greg Vickers, Justin Robertson, Paul Woolford, Paolo Mojo, Krysco, Justin Drake (Peace Division), Paul Harris (Dirty Vegas), Mark Knight and George Andrews. On New Years Eve '04, Nick played ClubClass, which he followed up a week later with a set in the main room at ClubClass' New Years Eve Reunion party. More recently Nick featured at ClubClass' Easter Special, whilst in April 2005 he performed in the Futurism room at ClubClass and then went on to close the Futurism room at the last ever Club Class at The Loft, whilst Carter looks forward to further bookings at Club Class' New Year's Eve where he'll be playing alongside Futureshock and of course the new home; The Ministry Of Sound which kicks off in February '06.
In January 2006 Nick bid farewell to Club Class to take on a brand new residency, this time for Deepsouth-music, a forward thinking and fresh underground house night.
The night titled 'Deepsouth-sessions' is run bi-monthly at London 's Rhythm Factory. This new residency has seen Nick play alongside Nathan Coles (Fabric, Wiggle), Lo/Rez (Flat & Round), Oliver Desmet of Amenti Records, The Electric Press ( 20:20 Vision), Inland Knights, Liz Edwards of Swag, Jay Tripwire and Grant Dell. This night will place massive emphasis on raising the standard for underground house music. Through Deepsouth Carter has also played the famous London carry on, Jadded in association with Euka Tech Records at The Egg, and at multiple other London venues'.
Carter doesn't stop there. He's also been busy in the studio producing under the moniker Deepsouth-soundsystem, with long term plans to develop the name into a record label.
When you consider how much he's already achieved at such a young age Nick Carter is definitely one to look out for. With an unwavering vision and a relentless determination the old guard better look out, for there's a new boy in town... |
